Loading units

Various units of measurement are used in road transport. International standards regulate the requirements for vehicles, specifying their maximum weight and dimensions for transporting goods.

Units of measurement for freight vehicles include:

  • Maximum cargo weight: up to 24 tons

  • Cargo volume: 85–112 m³

  • Loading area: up to 13.6 ldm (loading meters)

  • Capacity: up to 33 Euro pallets

Typical internal dimensions of a semi-trailer are: 13.6 m in length, 2.40 m in width, and 2.65 m in height.

When transporting partial loads, the transportation cost is calculated based on the weight or volume of the largest item. For instance, 1 m³ (cubic meter) equals 333 kg, 1 ldm (loading meter) equals 1850 kg, 1 Euro pallet equals 0.4 ldm and 740 kg, and 1 Finnish pallet equals 0.5 ldm or 925 kg.

Pallet dimensions:

  • 1 Euro pallet: 1200 x 800 mm

  • 1 Finnish pallet: 1200 x 1000 mm
